Calling all Pitt Pharmacy Student Space Pioneers!

Two experiments designed by multidisciplinary student teams from Pitt’s School of Pharmacy and Swanson School Of Engineering are GUARANTEED to be conducted onboard the ISS next Spring, performed by an Astronaut then returned to Earth. In addition, those teams will have the opportunity to present their work at a national conference in Washington DC and travel to view the launch of their experiment from the Kennedy Space Center. There is also a Mission Patch design contest included in this program. If you would like to be part of this exciting competition, you need to read below and act quickly.

We are offering this unique student research opportunity in partnership with Mission-14 of the Student Spaceflight Experiments Program (SSEP; http://ssep.ncesse.org/<https://nam05.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fssep.ncesse.org%2F&data=02%7C01%7Ckme33%40pitt.edu%7C92a118c7fcf34d0075b608d737ae8b2e%7C9ef9f489e0a04eeb87cc3a526112fd0d%7C1%7C0%7C637039095109675005&sdata=9YmD%2FnvKn4NA6DZTgOZaB4F7G%2FtsdxzTo6D3eUIIvMI%3D&reserved=0>). More information on this program is appended below. We are asking students interested in becoming part of a team. The Student Spaceflight Experiments Program (SSEP; http://ssep.ncesse.org/<https://nam05.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fssep.ncesse.org%2F&data=02%7C01%7Ckme33%40pitt.edu%7C92a118c7fcf34d0075b608d737ae8b2e%7C9ef9f489e0a04eeb87cc3a526112fd0d%7C1%7C0%7C637039095109684997&sdata=dGJpwEEXkjFJNmyXmCm%2F%2FtuYQMuU3t%2Ff3fWP3NFlFuA%3D&reserved=0>) is a competition style program designed to provide students a realistic research experience that involves real science whereby student teams are required to design the experiment, write a formal proposal, follow protocols of the program, and problem solve. Mentors we will ensure that the teams have all the tools and information to know their roles, the student roles and make it a positive experience for everyone. The students will be provided education and instructions for how to participate as well.

The SSEP program was started in 2010 and is run by Dr. Jeff Goldstein (Center Director, National Center for Earth and Space Science Education (NCESSE)) and is affiliated with NASA and other sponsors. It’s designed for K-16 students and has been very successful. Jeff and his team have an extensive amount of resources on their website http://ssep.ncesse.org/about-ssep/<https://nam05.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=http%3A%2F%2Fssep.ncesse.org%2Fabout-ssep%2F&data=02%7C01%7Ckme33%40pitt.edu%7C92a118c7fcf34d0075b608d737ae8b2e%7C9ef9f489e0a04eeb87cc3a526112fd0d%7C1%7C0%7C637039095109694986&sdata=1TskUx5eC24%2Fqoi5JUMWGxqOLCaCazGXJs4v4qF2IIg%3D&reserved=0>, are very hands on and fully committed to every school that participates to ensure success. Jeff will be conducting the training session tomorrow.
