Course Title: Introduction to Psychopharmacology and Management of Psychiatric Disorders: an Interprofessional Approach

Course Location: Cathedral of Learning (Room 2017)
Day/Time: Monday 4-7pm

Course Description: This course will serve as an introduction to psychopharmacology and the management of common psychiatric disorders including substance use disorders. This course is designed to familiarize students with the fundamentals of pharmacological as well as non-pharmacological treatment from a historical, sociological and practice perspective. This course aims to increase mental health literacy and enhance practitioner competency while elucidating the roles of healthcare providers within an interprofessional team framework. This is an introductory course.  No prerequisites are required.

Learning Objectives:

  *   Discuss the history, sociocultural context and epidemiology of psychiatric disorders in the United States
  *   Understand the basic principles of psychopharmacology and the role of medications in recovery
  *   Describe current pharmacological and nonpharmacological approaches in the evidence-based treatment of mental illness and addiction
  *   Compare and contrast desired therapeutic effects and common or serious adverse effects of commonly prescribed psychotropic medications or medication classes
  *   Appreciate the role of different health disciplines in the management of psychiatric disorders
  *   Provide appropriate patient counseling and serve as an advocate for patients regarding psychiatric medications
