American Asthma Foundation</a> <span style="color:#1F497D">has announced</span> its
<a href="http://www.americanasthmafoundation.org/funding-2016">2016 Scholar Awards</a> program– please note that they are encouraging investigators outside of the field to apply:<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The American Asthma Foundation provides Scholar Awards exclusively to early- to mid-career scientists in the United States. AAF Scholar Awards will provide $150,000 per year for two years, with the possibility of an additional $150,000
for a third year, based on progress and potential. It is anticipated that many of the projects will continue into a third year and thus benefit from the full $450,000 Award.

<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b>In supporting basic research, the AAF seeks to break new ground. To this end, we are particularly interested in attracting
<i>investigators from outside the field</i> to apply their expertise to the study of asthma. Prior research in asthma is not required.
<i>Investigators from within the field</i> are also eligible for awards, but their proposed work must represent a departure from their current and past research.<o:p></o:p></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The proposed work should be directed toward uncovering basic mechanisms in the pathogenesis of asthma. The ultimate goal is to find new approaches to treat, prevent and cure asthma. We support work from a broad range of investigative fields.
Studies may involve laboratory or clinical investigation, including genetic studies, but the Program will not sponsor therapeutic trials. Studies involving human materials must be approved and governed by the Awardee's institution.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b>Eligible applicants</b>. Scientists may apply if their initial independent faculty appointment at the level of Assistant Professor or equivalent was not before December 1, 2005 (for exceptions, see
<a href="http://www.americanasthmafoundation.org/award-policies">Award Policies</a>, Criteria for AAF Scholars). Applicants should have an independent research program, with national-level, independent funding. There is no citizenship requirement.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b>No preliminary data required</b>. Because most of our investigators are new to asthma, we do not require preliminary results.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b>Nature of work to be supported</b>. The program supports work in all investigative fields that may reveal new pathways in the pathogenesis of asthma. Our goal is to understand the pathophysiology of asthma in order to define new targets
for therapy. Studies may involve laboratory or clinical investigation, including genetic studies. Studies of humans are encouraged, but the AAF does not sponsor therapeutic trials.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b>Eligible institutions</b>. Investigators from nonprofit research organizations in the United States may apply.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><b>Application deadline. Applications are due December 1, 2015, 5 p.m. PST, for funding June 1, 2016.
