NIH is dedicated to fostering a well-trained and diverse biomedical research workforce, which involves supporting family-friendly policies and initiatives<https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fgrants.nih.gov%2Fgrants%2Fpolicy%2Fnih-family-friendly-initiative.htm&data=04%7C01%7Cwomeninmedicine%40list.pitt.edu%7C5f0478b3c8294510474708d8e268016b%7C9ef9f489e0a04eeb87cc3a526112fd0d%7C1%7C0%7C637508283606179208%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=%2FOkSkmOYoXLwSe7O931S8uJcc7b2gfzwLsWkCwIQcO4%3D&reserved=0> that balance work and family life for all biomedical researchers. Trainees and fellows supported by National Research Service Awards (NRSAs), for instance, are eligible<https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fgrants.nih.gov%2Fgrants%2Fguide%2Fnotice-files%2Fnot-od-16-105.html&data=04%7C01%7Cwomeninmedicine%40list.pitt.edu%7C5f0478b3c8294510474708d8e268016b%7C9ef9f489e0a04eeb87cc3a526112fd0d%7C1%7C0%7C637508283606189164%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=zA5F19rQZjYZUyaNWQDFfrQDDl3sJE03nk%2BOgHyLsp4%3D&reserved=0> for up to 60 calendar days (equivalent to 8 work weeks) of parental leave per year for the adoption or the birth of a child.

As part of our on-going efforts to develop programs which support family-friendly research environments for the NIH-supported workforce, NIH will begin providing an option for NRSA fellows to request support for childcare costs in new and continuation applications or as administrative supplements to existing awards<https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fgrants.nih.gov%2Fgrants%2Fguide%2Fpa-files%2FPA-20-272.html&data=04%7C01%7Cwomeninmedicine%40list.pitt.edu%7C5f0478b3c8294510474708d8e268016b%7C9ef9f489e0a04eeb87cc3a526112fd0d%7C1%7C0%7C637508283606189164%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=1mt7oXSmboBXaFhj73S0d3v0kaDp5yXzX7j1t7eAQSs%3D&reserved=0> effective April 8, 2021.

The NRSA childcare costs apply to full-time NIH-NRSA supported fellowship positions. Each fellow is eligible to receive $2,500 per budget period to defray childcare costs. The NRSA childcare costs are not tied to any payback obligations<https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fresearchtraining.nih.gov%2Ftraining%2Fpayback&data=04%7C01%7Cwomeninmedicine%40list.pitt.edu%7C5f0478b3c8294510474708d8e268016b%7C9ef9f489e0a04eeb87cc3a526112fd0d%7C1%7C0%7C637508283606199118%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=K0eVpnUefI2pwZWJNTEqBCby0KSa46VupwWCgXeLad0%3D&reserved=0>.

NRSA fellows are encouraged to carefully review this Guide Notice<https://nam12.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fgrants.nih.gov%2Fgrants%2Fguide%2Fnotice-files%2FNOT-OD-21-069.html&data=04%7C01%7Cwomeninmedicine%40list.pitt.edu%7C5f0478b3c8294510474708d8e268016b%7C9ef9f489e0a04eeb87cc3a526112fd0d%7C1%7C0%7C637508283606199118%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C1000&sdata=9uHHfZMMWTOgtaYs54xN4ep1B4RGjw6to%2BrkFNCnyBc%3D&reserved=0> for more information, and contact relevant NIH staff with any questions if needed. Please stay tuned as related guidance is expected for NRSA supported trainees in Phase 2 of this initiative (anticipated in early fiscal year 2022).
