But I did read the piece and balked at it all the way. Reconfirm that this is one reason why we need non-anonymous reviews. Providing appropriate critiques is necessary for good scientific practice. That said, reviewers are human after all and humans can be petty at times, to the extent of being extremely unprofessional. Critiques and comments can be strong and harsh if there is a scientific reason for doing so, but need to be offered in a professional manner. While critiquing our own coauthored papers or doing internal reviews we are expected to be professional...so why cant I expect the same from an anonymous reviewer.
Perhaps, in addition to scientific training, all scientists should get some training in basic communication practices!
