[Womeninmedicine] Why Some Teams Are Smarter Than Others

Hi Ora,

I’m not sure if this is something you would be interested in distributing to this list (it might be slightly out of scope depending on your audience), but I just wrote an article that was published in Science on the parental leave policies in Europe compared to the US (mainly focused on letting postdocs know there are other options, including options for men to take paid leave). This was based on my own experience, but I also outlined general policies in Europe. Here’s the link: http://www.sciencemag.org/content/347/6219/346.full It happened - by accident - to be timed pretty well with President Obama’s push for paid sick leave for parents last week and in yesterday’s State of the Union Address.

As a side note, I will be leaving the University at the end of January for a position at the FDA in Maryland. I’ll be working as an engineer evaluating medical devices, but am hoping that living near DC will allow me to simultaneously dig a bit more into policies for women in science. It was really nice connecting with you this past year.

Similar to the article I sent earlier this week, but with an interesting study included showing that having more women improves team performance.
