It is ridiculous that a place that calls itself a hospital does not
provide an appropriate place for nursing mothers to pump! In fact,
they should have a room with one or more hospital quality fast pumps
for the use of their employees. The question is who to lobby? They
should be called to task for failing to promote healthy practices
such as breast-feeding by their employees. Other hospitals do much
better. I can't believe there isn't an available space. Perhaps you
need to ask around.
On the other end of things, in order to be successful at
breast-feeding in this culture, you must be very creative,
aggressive, determined, and not too shy. Look over your environment
carefully, and figure out a space where you can achieve 20-30 minutes
of privacy and make it yours when you want to pump. Also, feed your
child wherever you are. Since most breast-feeding mothers are quite
discreet as they feed their child, if you make others uncomfortable,
that's their problem - you are just feeding your child! Having
breast-fed 3 children each for 10-12 months while being a working mom
- I can tell you that it's a worthwhile struggle. Good Luck!
