Hello:

March 1, 2019 will be the 30th anniversary day of the administration (IV injection) of FK506 (tacrolimus) to the first human being.
This was a liver transplant patient, who made history being the first human to receive this drug (FK900506).
This was accomplished within two years after the start of the preclinical safety and efficacy studies, in vitro and in several animal models.

Dr. Starzl had the vision to get this drug from Japan, and pioneered its development and paved way for the multicenter trials, and the drug received FDA approval in April 1994 (in about 5 years after the first patient received this drug). As you all know Tacrolimus is the primary immunosuppressive drug currently used in solid organ transplant patients today.

School of Pharmacy played a significant role in this work.
