Sent on behalf of Dr. Pam Smithburger, Chair of the PharmD Curriculum Committee

Dear School of Pharmacy Community:

As most of you are probably aware, the Medical Marijuana Act in Pennsylvania became effective on May 17, 2016, and the first dispensary in the Pittsburgh area began patient sales on February 15th, 2018.

Residents of Pennsylvania can obtain medicinal marijuana while under a practitioner’s care for the treatment of one of the following serious medical conditions:

  *   Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
  *   Autism
  *   Cancer
  *   Crohn’s Disease
  * Damage to the nervous tissue of the spinal cord with objective neurological indication of intractable spasticity
  *   Epilepsy
  *   Glaucoma
  * HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) / AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome)
  *   Huntington’s Disease
  *   Inflammatory Bowel Disease
  *   Intractable Seizures
  *   Multiple Sclerosis
  *   Neuropathies
  *   Parkinson’s Disease
  *   Post-traumatic Stress Disorder
  * Severe chronic or intractable pain of neuropathic origin or severe chronic or intractable pain in which conventional therapeutic intervention and opiate therapy is contraindicated or ineffective
  *   Sickle Cell Anemia
The PharmD Curriculum Committee has evaluated the inclusion of medical marijuana in the curriculum. In order to provide all students and faculty with background information, the Curriculum Committee has identified two resources to share at this time:

  1. Howerton M. Medical Marijuana in PA: Evidence for Use in Older Adults. UPMC Pharmacy Grand Rounds, Pittsburgh, PA; 11 October 2017

This is an ACPE-accredited 1-hour continuing education lecture presented by one of our current PGY2 pharmacy residents. It provides an overview of PA Act 16 as well as additional information regarding the use of medical marijuana in the elderly population.
