As you may know, the National Resources Centers and Foreign Languages and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships at US R1 universities in our field are mostly funded by a federal grant called Title VI through the US Department of Education. This funding supports not
just SEEES, but all area studies. The Fulbright-Hays program, also through the same funding source, funds dissertation research as well as group projects abroad.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The US House of Representatives has a proposal to cut that funding by a whopping
<b>59%, from $85.7 million to $35 million</b>, for the fiscal year 2024!<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"> * Title VI would decrease from $75.4 million to $35 million, a $40.4 million or 54% reduction.<br>
* Fulbright-Hays funding of $10.3 million would be completely eliminated.<br>

We are asking you to write to your Representative to oppose this appropriations bill (HR 5894). We expect this bill may be taken up on the House floor as soon as November 14th, so it’s important to act quickly.<br>
